Biographical Writing

Commencing in February 2009 I am offering a new, untried approach to the theme of biography and personal healing: a part time course that travels from memory to imagination by widening the perspective from ordinary life to the afterlife experience of the soul to create a contemporary ‘Bardo of the West’, a map of the soul in all its diverse experiences.

The aim is a total biography that integrates the facts of the past and the imaginal explorations of the future with the help of creative writing, story telling, acting and performance.

A major feature is the working with communal imagination (see attached flyer) to liberate personal creativity and access the depth dimension of life.

The course is a culmination of all my previous work in the area of ‘Story Medicine’, and creative and transformation writing (see also my recently published book ‘The Power of Stories, Floris Books, UK).

Students say...

Harriet Sawyer on Working the Word

"Classes have been a time for exploring what it is to be alive – a time for culture to live as we taste texts from ancient to modern as though for the first time.

Horst Kornberger has inspired us all with his wide knowledge of literature throughout civilization and time. But his real genius is an ability to inspire a sense of wonder. Through developing reverence for the word, class members have become inadvertent magicians...

With the development of wonder and the encouragement of writers from across the ages (as well as Horst and fellow-adventurers) creativity has flowed. I have been astonished by what unexpected bouquets have been plucked from pens, what doves have burst forth and flown.

For anyone who loves the written word and would like to write more, I have nothing but praise for this course. Working the Word has been an enlivening, joyful, and healing experience."
